Indian students in Canada are allowed to work off-campus in Canada. This type of work is where students can work with employees or organisations that are not on their university campus. Students were earlier allowed to work with more than 2 employers also but under a certain time limit. But after the work permit updates in Canada, students can work with a different organisation in their free time without any hourly restrictions.

Off-Campus Work Rules

  1. The student should have a valid study permit and should be studying at DLI (Designated Learning Institute). A valid Student Visa Canada is required to get a study permit.

  2. The student should be enrolled in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training programme.

  3. The programme in which the student is enrolled should be at least six months long. 

  4. The international student must have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work in Canada.

  5. If the student is allowed to switch universities or authorised to leave universities, they are not allowed to work off-campus.

On-Campus Working in Canada

Indian students in Canada are allowed to work at Canadian Universities. In this, student works only in the buildings or organisations directly owned by the educational institute they are enrolled in. There are certain cases where the university has more than one campus; in this case, the student is allowed to work on the campus where they are studying. On-campus employers are:

  1. University

  2. Faculty members

  3. Student organisation

  4. The private contractor that provides on-campus services to the university

On-Campus Work Rules

  • Indian students should have a valid study permit. A valid Student Visa Canada is required to get a study permit. 

  • Students should have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to become eligible for working on campus in Canada

  • The student must be enrolled full-time at a public post-secondary institution, such as a college, university, trade or technical school, or CEGEP in Quebec, a private post-secondary institution that follows the same regulations as public schools in Quebec. Additionally, they may participate in secondary or postsecondary programmes at private or public institutions in Quebec that offer qualifying courses lasting at least 900 hours and leading to a diploma in vocational studies (DVS) or an attestation of occupational specialisation (AVS).
